Celebrity knitter Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, a bestselling author with a hearty following online, brought her needles to Nathan Phillips Square on Wednesday for a merry “knit-in” for striking librarians, now ten days on the picket line.
About sixty participants laid out blankets on the asphalt and brought tupperware containers filled with apples and other snacks as they knit together skirts and scarves. Dozens of picketing workers sang Solidarity Forever. A spooling station kept the yarn coming, alongside cheeky signs such as “stop fleecing library workers”.
It’s the latest creative attempt to raise awareness for workers whose job action may not have the same public impact as, say, a garbage or daycare strike.
