If Apple wins do consumers lose?

I’ve been reading a bunch of folk complaining that Apple’s victory over Samsung is dire for consumers, leaving them with less choice and more expensive kit. So, translated, should we just have one or 2 companies do the innovating and just let others copy them with impunity?

How does that add to consumer choice guys? Ain’t that just the same technology built more cheaply and painted in different colours just to get us a tenner off? On principle I think real innovation should be rewarded and protected and copycats severely punished. Without that sort of protection where would the drive and investment come from to create anything new and truly give us consumers a proper choice?
